What happens when Ukrainian soul meets Japanese floral art? On a sunny May afternoon in Nootdorp, creativity blossomed — quite literally — in a heartfelt masterclass led by our own Olena Kozlova.
🎨 Meet Olena Kozlova
Olena Kozlova, a cherished member of our Ruta choir, is an extraordinary artist originally from Kyiv. For over 20 years, she worked in Ukraine as a professional florist. But that’s just one part of her story.
Olena is also the creative force behind the handcrafted Ukrainian souvenirs ‘Kazka” and curiosities featured at our concerts — from delicate wreaths to traditional crafts. Each piece she creates carries cultural depth, personal warmth, and artistic skill.
She puts her heart and soul into everything she does — and this time, she shared her passion with others through a very special workshop.
🌿 A Day of Flowers and Friendship
On May 24, 2025, our choir Ruta performed in Nootdorp, hosted by the organisation SWOP. After the music ended, something beautiful began: a masterclass in floral design inspired by the Japanese tradition of Ikebana.
The event brought together women of all ages and backgrounds. The classroom quickly transformed into a vibrant, fragrant space full of flowers, smiles, and creative energy. Even the children who had attended the concert joined in, captivated by the chance to create something with their hands.
Olena guided the participants with care and enthusiasm, making sure everyone felt welcome and supported — whether they were experienced or trying this for the first time.
💫 More Than Just Flowers
This was more than a lesson in floral composition — it was a cultural moment. Throughout the event, Ukrainian, Dutch, and English could be heard in conversation, yet everyone understood each other perfectly. The language of creativity bridged all differences.
Olena was assisted by several warm-hearted helpers, who contributed to the calm and cozy atmosphere. They handed out materials, took photos, helped the children, and made sure every detail felt thoughtful.
Each participant went home with their own floral arrangement — a piece of beauty, harmony, and memory to brighten their space.
